Man hanged in volatile Iran province

Sun. 11 Nov 2007
Iran Focus

Tehran, Iran, Nov. 11 - A man was hanged on Sunday in the volatile province of Sistan-va-Baluchistan, south-eastern Iran, state media reported.

The man, identified as Nader Kalbali, was hanged in a prison in the provincial capital Zahedan, the official news agency IRNA said.

He was accused of drug trafficking.

Iranian authorities routinely execute dissidents on bogus charges such as armed robbery and drug smuggling.

Sistan-va-Baluchistan Province is home to Baluchis, a predominantly Sunni Muslim ethnic minority.

Iran has witnessed escalating unrest since 2006 in areas populated by Baluchis, who complain of discriminatory and repressive policies by the theocratic regime.

Since 2006, Iranian authorities have stepped up executions in the restive province in what many Baluchis believe is a response to a spate of attacks by dissidents on government and security officials.

Top Baloch rebel leader 'killed'

By Syed Shoaib Hasan ; BBC News, Islamabad

A top rebel leader from Pakistan's troubled province of Balochistan has been killed, his family says.

Mir Balaach Marri, alleged head of the banned Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), was killed in Afghanistan, Pakistani intelligence sources told the BBC. The BLA and rebel tribesmen have been fighting Pakistani security forces for more provincial autonomy since 2000.
Nationalists say the mineral-rich province has been deprived of its rightful share of its own resources.

'Covert operation'

Mr Balaach's brother, Sardar Gazain Marri, said he had learnt of the rebel leader's death on Tuesday evening.

"Some of his comrades informed me he had been martyred," he told the BBC. "I cannot disclose the location as it would further threaten the lives of those with him." Sardar Marri says he believes his brother was killed in an army operation in Balochistan. "I believe there were a clashes in the province on Tuesday in which Mir Balaach was killed." However, intelligence officials in Pakistan told the BBC the rebel leader had been killed in Afghanistan. They also declined to discuss the circumstances surrounding his killing.

Analysts say the killing could have been the result of a covert operation.

War and escape

Mir Balaach Khan Marri is said to have been the military mastermind behind the Baloch rebels. The second son of one of Balochistan's premier tribal chiefs, Sardar Khair Bux Marri, Mir Balach Marri was a committed nationalist.
He resigned from the provincial parliament in 2003, complaining that Balochistan was still being deprived of its rights.

The province is Pakistan's largest, and its richest in natural resources. It has some of the biggest proven reserves of natural gas in the world. There are also large deposits of gold, copper and other minerals. The rebels say most of these resources are appropriated by the federal government, while locals are denied employment in regional projects.

All development indexes show Balochistan as the least developed of Pakistan's four provinces.

In 2000, the nationalists launched armed attacks to press for greater provincial autonomy. Pakistan's army replied with a massive military operation in the province four years later.
Over the next two years, hundreds of people were killed in clashes between the rebels and security forces. Hundreds of thousands fled the area as fighting worsened. The insurgency came to a climax in August 2006 when army troops surrounded several Baloch rebel leaders. This included Mir Balaach Marri and veteran politician and former provincial governor Sardar Akbar Khan Bugti.

While Mr Balaach managed to escape along with several of his comrades, Nawab Bugti was killed. The clash also claimed the lives of dozens of army officers.
After that most rebels leaders are thought to have gone into exile in  neighbouring Afghanistan. But they continued to conduct raids into the region. In recent days, these had increased. But observers say the uprising could now be in trouble with the rebels' operational leader dead.

Balach Marri killed: Violence in Quetta, schools closed

By Saleem Shahid

QUETTA, Nov 21: Baloch leader Nawabzada Balach Marri was killed along with his bodyguards in a clash somewhere inside Afghanistan on Wednesday, triggering widespread violence in Quetta and some other parts of Balochistan.

Two policemen and three others were killed in incidents of firing, bomb explosions and armed attacks while several government vehicles, offices and shops were set on fire.

Three people were killed on Kalat Street when unknown armed men opened fire.

Late in the night, the government called out the Balochistan Constabulary and ordered the closure of all educational institutions.

Nawabzada Gazeen Marri, the elder brother of Balach Marri, confirmed his death. ?Nawabzada Balach Marri was killed in a clash with security forces,? he said while talking to the BBC.

However, Gazeen Marri refused to name the place where he was killed. ? I cannot disclose the place where the incident took place in view of the safety of other colleagues.?

He said only members of his family could decide about the burial of Mir Balach Marri, as ?we do not want his body to be disgraced the way the rulers treated that of Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti?.

Beeburg Baloch, a spokesman for the defunct Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), called newsmen in Quetta by satellite phone from an unknown place to inform them about the nationalist leader?s death.

He said two other Baloch leaders had also lost their lives in the clash. However, some other reports suggested that besides Balach Marri, seven of his security guards and six other people were killed in the incident.

?AIR STRIKE?: Other sources suggested Balach Marri was killed in an air strike by NATO forces in Gramshar area of Afghanistan?s Helmand province. They believed the Western forces had mistaken Mr Marri and his entourage for Taliban fighters.

The sources said Kabul had informed Islamabad about the incident.

Nawabzada Balach Marri, who was the youngest son of Nawab Khair Bakhsh Marri, had sought refuge in Afghanistan following the crackdown in the Marri and Bugti areas after the killing of Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti last year.

He had been elected member of the Balochistan Assembly from his home constituency of Kohlu in the 2002 general election. He never attended assembly proceedings after the opening session.

Balach Marri was thought to be the chief of the defunct Baloch Liberation Army.

Nawab Khair Bakhsh Marri himself had gone to Afghanistan and stayed there for years after he was released from the Hyderabad prison in 1977.

He was jailed with 53 others, Khan Abdul Wali Khan and Mir Ghous Bakhsh Bizenjo among them, by the Bhutto government on charges of sedition.

VIOLENCE: Three people were killed in Quetta?s Huda area late on Wednesday night after unknown armed men riding a motorbike opened fire on them.

In another incident, a group of armed men opened fire on a police van on the Brewery road, killing a constable and injuring three other policemen.

Two policemen were injured after a bomb went off near Wapda?s grid station in Sariab.

Arsonists torched an ambulance of the Bolan Medical Complex and a building formerly housing a government organisation in Killi Shabo.Students staying in the university hostel took to the streets late on Wednesday night, pelting vehicles with stones and torching two of them.

Two troops of the Frontier Corps were injured when a hand grenade was thrown at their vehicle in the Sariab area.

An office of the Punjabi Ittehad was set on fire on Query road.

In Turbat, angry mobs ransacked shops and also set on fore an office of the livestock department.

Niaz Zehri, a government official, suffered injuries when a mob attacked him in Khuzdar. They also torched his car. Two powerful explosions damaged telephone lines in Mastung.

Train services between Quetta and the rest of the country were suspended after a track was blown up near Sibi.

Baloch movement won’t die down: Ataullah Mengal

23-11-2007

Azizullah Khan

QUETTA: Leader of Balochistan National Party and veteran politician Sardar Attaullah Mengal said Thursday the killing of Nawab Bugti and Balach Marri would affect the Baloch movement but more people will come to accomplish the mission.

Talking to this scribe on telephone from his native town Wadh, Sardar Attaullah Mengal said that history reveals that such movements do not die and other people come forward to take the charge. Sardar Attaullah Mengal emphasised that from each drop of the martyred, heroes born and such heroes accomplish the mission of the movement. The Baloch movement would also flourish and more people will come to take the movement to its ultimate destination.

Sardar Attaullah Mengal was when asked about the incident of Balach Marri's killing, he said that General Pervez Musharaf had stated once that he will hit the people in manner that they would not understand what hit them. He further said that after some time Nawab Akbar Bugti was killed. Now Musharaf again warned that he will hit other people also, and the killing of Balach Marri was its continuation, he added.

Attaullah Mengal said that Musharraf enjoys power and has disturbed the whole country by using power. The Baloch cannot do any thing except rendering sacrifices and the Baloch were presenting their lives for Balochistan.

When he was asked did you contact Nawab Khair Bakhsh Marri and what was his point of view, Attaullah Mengal said that he contacted Nawab Marri but he was not admitting the fact that Balach was killed. Mengal disclosed that Nawab Mari's morale was high and he has the same information what other people have regarding Balach's killing.

Sardar Attaullah Mengal explained that there was no direct contact with Balach Marri but Nawab Marri and he were receiving information from third and fourth level contacts that was why it became a mystery. Attaullah Mengal said that he has the information that Balach was killed in an activity somewhere near the Pak-Afghan border but it was not clear who killed him.

Benazir Bhutto condemns murder of Balaach Marri

24th November, 2007 ; http://www.onlinenews.com.pk/

ISLAMABAD: Former Prime minister and Chairperson of the Pakistan Peoples Party Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto condemning the killing of former member Balochistan Assembly Balaach Marri said, "it is a bad omen for the integrity of the Federation".

Balach was killed on November 20, 2007 in a military operation in Kohlu. His spokesman said that several others were also killed with him.

In a statement Thursday the former Prime Minister said that "the killing and bloodshed in Balochistan must immediately end."

Mohtarma Bhutto called for national reconciliation in Balochistan, and end of military operations, release of all political prisoners, general amnesty and compensation for all dislocated during the fighting.

The former Prime Minister said Balochistan was in danger of breaking from the Federation unless an urgent political solution was found. She called for the release of Sardar Akhtar Mengal, Sardar Salal Bugti, Mr. Sarki and others.

She recalled that in August 2006 the security forces killed Balochistan’s former Governor and Chief Minister Nawab Akbar Bugti, who headed the Bugti tribe. She said that the killing of Nawab Akbar Bugti had inflamed the passions of the Baloch, particularly the young.

The killing of Balach Khan Marri would further inflame passions and could only fuel the fire burning in Balochistan, she said.

"People of Balochistan, like people everywhere, need food, clothing and shelter, and could bullets".

She recalled the earlier injustice done to Dr. Shazia Khalid at gunpoint, allegedly by security personnel in Balochistan, and the disappearances of hundreds of Baloch nationalist supporters. She said that nationalism could not be crushed by force. People could only be won over by acknowledging the rights and respecting them.

Mohtarma Bhutto said the present regime must review policies in the province and intellectuals must write about it, otherwise, without a solution, consequences for the Federation would be serious.

She said the crisis in Balochistan, like the rest of the country, was political. "We must trust our people, respect and honour them, instead of confronting them."

On behalf of the Pakistan Peoples Party, Mohtarma condoled with Nawab Khair Bux Marri. She prayed that God give him patience to bear the irreparable loss and bless the soul of the departed. PR/AR

Bennazir offer condolence

Source: Dawan

KARACHI, Nov 22: Veteran Baloch leader Nawab Khair Bux Marri said on Thursday he did not believe that his youngest son Balach had been killed in Afghanistan and he was not accepting condolences, saying he would do so only if the body of Balach was handed over to him.
Mr Marri did not accept condolences offered by former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, who had called on him. It was possibly Ms Bhutto?s first meeting with Mr Marri.
?Don?t condole with me, don?t offer fateha because it is offered for the dead people, and I believe Balach is alive,? Mr Marri said.
?I won?t mind accepting condolences from friends, relatives and all those who have respect for me and my family if the death of Balach is confirmed and my heart accepts that,? Mr Marri told people who had gathered at his relative?s house in the Defence Housing Authority.
Mr Marri said he was trying on his own to find out facts; there were a lot of things to be proved. The primary proof will be the body of Balach.
?Let me see his body and then perhaps I would accept that he has departed for good,? he said.
He said that Nato forces, the Pakistani authorities and late Akbar Bugti?s grandson Brahmdagh were all being accused of having killed Balach, but he had no proof and evidence to believe these reports.
?Brahmdagh cannot be involved in the killing because Balach was like an eye for Brahmdagh and no one could damage one?s eyes,? he said.
?If he (Balach) resisted for the rights of his land, he committed no sin. If he is dead he would be a torch-bearer for many others to follow the same path,? Mr Marri said.

?Our resistance should continue. My son might have committed some mistakes but he was on the right path,? Ghulam Qadir Marri, a spokesman for Nawab Marri, quoted him as saying.

Protests in Balochistan over BLA leader’s killing

Nirupama Subramanian ; http://www.thehindu.com

23-11-2007

ISLAMABAD: The killing of Balaach Marri, a Baloch nationalist leader who was said to be the chief of the shadowy Balochistan Liberation Army, continued to have repercussions in Balochistan for the second day on Thursday.

The BLA, blamed for a long-running armed insurgency in the province, claimed on Wednesday that Marri was killed in a military operation. But other reports, quoting unnamed military sources, said he was killed in Afghanistan during in-fighting among those with whom he was hiding.

The news of his killing triggered several incidents of rioting and arson in many parts of Balochistan on Wednesday evening. Five people, including two policemen, were killed.

On Thursday, parts of the province observed a shutter-down strike in response to a call by the Balochistan National Party (BNP), National Party (NP) and the Baloch Students’ Organization.

In the provincial capital Quetta, the strike was partial, with commercial establishments in Baloch-dominated areas shut down. But in other parts of the city, it was business as usual, although the government shut down all educational institutions.

Police detained 50 people from Quetta after protesters burnt two government vehicles and pelted stones at government buildings.

Over a dozen were detained in Gwadar, the port city in southern Balochistan, where the strike was observed more widely. Some parts of the province such as Khuzdar, Dalbandin, Turbat, Sibi, Panjgur, Mustung, Noshaki were also badly affected by the strike.

In some places, protesters blocked roads and burnt tyres. Minor skirmishes between protesters and law enforcers were reported from some parts of the province.

Pakistan People’s Party leader Benazir Bhutto was the only politician to condemn the killing of Marri. She called it “a bad omen for the integrity of the federation” of Pakistan.

In a statement, she said, “The killing and bloodshed in Balochistan must immediately end.”

Ms. Bhutto called for national reconciliation in Balochistan, end to all military operations, release of all political prisoners, general amnesty and compensation for all dislocated during the fighting.

My leader, my lord waja Balach Marri,

I have received the sad news of your martyrdom. I don’t know if I’m supposed to mourn you or shall I celebrate your martyrdom for your motherland.

Because you are in the heaven and with the prophet, Nawab Nouroz, Nawab Bugti, Fida Jan, Dr. Khalid, Diljan and all the Baloch shohada, looking down at us. Looking real down to our two faces nationalists who are shouting nationalist slogans at the day time and selling their motherland in the same night in the name of development and democracy.

Waja Balach,
What you did is the highest rank in Islam and you proved your nationalism. You proved to us those positions in the Pakistani government and wealth doesn’t mean anything. You proved to our so called nationalists that few seats in an alien assembly is nothing but a waste of time. You have set a great example for the new generation to follow.

No, we shouldn’t mourn you. We should mourn the ones who are dead long ago, but still fighting and campaigning for the elections. We should burry and mourn the ones, who killed their innersole for an MNA or MPA seat and few Rupees. Their bodies stink of corruption and they are polluting our motherland with their dead bodies.

Your sacrifices and devotion for your homeland and your love for your people is unforgettable.
You gave up your name, fame and wealth for Balochistan. You had everything anyone could dream of, except your independence; you sold them all to buy your freedom.
For you, nothing was more important than your motherland. On the other hand our parliamentarians are selling everything to buy a seat to get few rupees, even if it comes with curses from the nation and the land. Their parents owe the nation an apology for giving birth and raising such selfish and worthless beings.

I salute you, shaheed Nawab Balaach Marri; I salute your parent and family for having a great son like you. I salute your tribe and the whole Baloch nation and pray to almighty God to give us the strength and power to follow your footsteps.

My sincere apologies to waja Atta Shad:

“SUJDA KANAN QABRA TAI ANCHO KE HAWANDE DAR ENT
MANI WAJA MANI QIBLA MANA HIJBAR NA BRAHIT KAFERI”

Makurani

-------------------
May the Peace and Mercy of Almighty Allah be upon the soul of Shaheed Nawabzada Balach Marri , and may Allah ease the loss for his family as well as the Baloch Nation .

Brother Makurani is right at every turn , let this be a lesson to all those who consider themselves to be Baloch and continue to think that they have any influential role to play in Pakistani politics . The only role they play is causing confusion and further misery .

Sincerely

Shab Baloch
----------------------

Balach was the son of a Nawab who left the comfort of life in London for the hills of Balochistan to take up the struggle for a cause he believed in -- the liberation of his country Balochistan from the brutal Pakistani occupation. He never compromised the Baloch principles of fair war and never resorted to terrorist tactics, despite Pakistani provocations. He died a hero to his people. May he rest in peace.

May the Baloch find peace and freedom.
